Artist:
GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM, American, 1811-1879 (here attributed)

Title:
PORTRAIT OF MARTHA A. LIVINGSTON LYKINS

Martha A. Livingston Lykins Bingham, known as "Mattie", was the artist's third and last wife. Study of extant and undated photographic portraits of Mattie have been convincing for identification.  Based on stylistic and documentary evidence, this is probably Bingham's portrait of Mattie, circa 1855, the lost pendant to a portrait Bingham made of her then husband Dr. Johnson Lykins, which is known to exist but as yet has not been located.
